Woofs and Kittys Dog Show in Battersea.Sunday, June 12, 2011 Saturday May 14th dawned bright and sunny and that was the start of the amazing day and all the hard work and dedication of Lynne, Wendy and another loyal supporter of ACA, called Sue Silk. They all did a brilliant job and raised an amazing £706 for ACA and the stars of the day we feel must surely be Milly and Melon. Please read Lynne and Wendy's story below and enjoy the photos.
Meet Melon and Milly! We found Melon in the street during the rainy season in The Gambia, West Africa. His ears had been cut off and he was starving to death. We took him home and nursed him back to health and he became part of our family consisting of several street dogs who also had been neglected, abused or injured. Milly was a terrified tiny puppy living alone under a container near the beach Helpless and very emaciated, it took several days of feeding her before we could gain her trust and take her home. We already had several dogs, so re-homed her only to find that she was being severely abused and beaten. Tied up in the blazing sun with no food and water and unable to lie down as her chain was too short, she was sitting in her own faeces and had maggot-infested open wounds. We vowed never to let her out of our sight again. We brought Melon and Milly back to England. They were the lucky ones. But we never forget those left behind. Animal Care Association of The Gambia was started up to try to tackle this huge problem. They do a brilliant job but are seriously under funded and need your help. They rely on tourist donations and are extremely grateful for any funds received. London contacts: www. animalcaregambia.com Lynne 07810 595 404email:acagambia@yahoo.com Wendy 07894 657 474
Boat Trip April 10th 2011Thursday, April 14, 2011 Sunday April 10th and the sun was shining as usual as more than 25 happy people gathered by the jetty ready to board the Pirogue. Excited passengers and ACA Committee Members were greeted by the crew and helped aboard. All the provisions for a great day out were loaded and the ropes untied and off we sailed. Once we had everyone settled, some on the lower deck and some up the stairs to the top deck and each finding a comfortable place to either sleep, read a book, chat or book with the Masseuse/Therapist for a relaxing massage or a manicure/pedicure. Then the breakfast tables were set up, fresh bread, butter, crackers, cheeses, egg mayonnaise, hummus and tea or coffee. We continued to sail peacefully along the creeks and a little fishing was done and some more chatting etc, the ACA T-shirts and Magnets/Key Rings were examined and purchased and then it was time to eat again and the Lunch Tables were set up. The tables were laden with all sorts of tempting dishes - Quiches, Salads, Coleslaw, a variety of vegetarian dishes, Pasta Dishes and cold roast chicken and stuffing! Everyone was impressed to see such a marvelous array of fine foods and of course the bar was open for a cooling beer, glass of wine or a soft drink. After lunch a few people carried on with their fishing lines and then amazing numbers of people were jumping over the side and splashing about in the water and cameras were quickly out and keen photographers were snapping away. Please take a look at all this activity, some amazing attempts at synchronized swimming, group waves and Micha and his temporary loan of the dugout that he saw nestling in the mangroves! All of this we have managed to capture and we would love to share these pictures with you - please take a look and see what fun can be had on a Sunday in the creeks. While relaxing after lunch and before afternoon tea, David from Kim Kombo delivered an interesting and entertaining chat about the Plantation and Distillery. David then wandered amongst us offering us samples of the many and varied liquers - all delicious and homemade here in The Gambia. All of this was then finished off by Tea and Coffee and delicious homemade cakes and biscuits. (And even more swimming!) NEXT BOAT TRIP TO BE ARRANGED - WHEN DATE IS ANNOUNCED - WHY NOT GIVE IT A WHIRL? Congratulations to Alida and Micha.Saturday, January 08, 2011 Alida - one of the founder members of ACA and her husband Micha, one of our veterinary surgeons are very proud and happy to announce the safe arrival, (a little earlier than expected - at 35 weeks,) of their precious son. Neo Phillip Meyer! Born on the 4th January 2011 at 9.46am 2670 g (5.14 lbs) 48,3 cm (19inch) We all wish Alida and Micha many joyous and happy moments with their newly born son, Neo. Pictures of Neo and picture two with his Mum and Dad. Neo has enjoyed his first Boat Trip on Sunday March 20th - we all thought he really enjoyed his day on The Creeks and a small chance for Mum and Dad to relax also! Boat Trip - First of the new season.Saturday, December 04, 2010 The first ACA Boat Trip this season was held on Sunday November 21st and a wonderful time was had by all. The ACA felt that it was a great success and we are looking forward to many more happy trips this season. To whet your appetites we have a few photographs of that day, showing you some of the pleasures you can enjoy on the day. There are some of the ladies enjoying a relaxing time in the shade on the boat, one of the lunch table, some happy chaps diving into the cool water, ladies having pedicure and massage,a beautiful shot taken at Lamin Lodge and another of a very peaceful view enjoyed from the boat and finally another on of people just "doing their own thing" and relaxing. So the day can be spent just as you want - reading, swimming, eating good food, pampering yourself, sleeping, playing board games or just simply chatting and enjoying the company of others. Please do come and join us - we would love to see you! Another ACA Boat Trip was held on Wednesday December 22nd. This trip was also a very good day and more funds were raised. Sue Stage held her own Boat Trip on Friday January 7th and of course everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and Sue has very kindly donated 13,250 Dalasi from that trip to Animal Care Association The Gambia. The Boat Trips are really being enjoyed by one and all and over 30 people were on the trip help on Sunday March 20th. Reports on all monies raised will appear in the March Newsletter. Please contact Bernie on 7992006 for details of the Boat Trips. |
